Scores

[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3), primarily in semibreves, introduces each of the four textual phrases, but also permeates imitative texture particularly with text “resurrexit.” New material associated with “laetare” and the final “alleluia,” remarkably similar in rhythmic content, demonstrate comparable imitative treatment. A four-note motive coupled with “alleluia” that concludes the second textual phrase pervades the texture at times in a descending sequence (B, mm. 21-7). Lassus combines syllabic and melismatic styles in declamatory setting. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Resurrexit

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

Description

The seven settings of Regina caeli by Orlande de Lassus are considerably indebted to the antiphon chant often treating the melody as a cantus firmus in equal note values. On the other hand, the composer’s Alma redemptoris mater and Ave regina coelorum settings lack any references to their respective antiphon chants.
