Polyphonic ensemble STBX

D-C1; Ct-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3), assigned to T as cantus firmus primarily in longae, breves, and semibreves, steadfastly affirms its mode including the b♭ signature and F final while the three other voices exhibit e Phrygian mode. To avoid harmonic conflict in this bimodal motet, the cantus firmus enters following three and two measures of imitative statements in Ct, D and B for the respective 1.p. and 2.p.; in a similar manner, the cantus firmus cadences in the antepenultimate measure prior to the conclusion of each pars. Chant casts no melodic influence upon the other voices. Duo and trio passages in the 2.p. (“resurrexit dixit” and the final “alleluia”) contrast with surrounding material. Syllabic and melismatic styles define the text setting though text underlay is not a primary concern. The final six bars contrast in triple mensuration. Final e, F final for T with b♭ signature.
