Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Voci pari. Range, F-f’. Chant (App. 3), relegated to the T as a cantus firmus, permeates the imitative, contrapuntal fabric with anticipatory entrances for each textual phrase. New material (e.g., B and C for “sicut dixit”) is also treated imitatively. Contrasting two and three-voice passages with varying combinations of voices define the structure. The final “alleluia” constitutes almost a third of the antiphon (mm. 58-83).[1] Textual setting exhibits syllabic style at beginning of textual phrases and considerable melismatic treatment of “alleluia” sections. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. A six-measure phrase in the S of RC083 (mm. 77-83) is quoted in the A (mm. 59-65) RC084 with an abbreviated statement in T (mm. 66-9).
