Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSABTXXXXXXX

Two equal choirs. Choir I: C-C1; A-C3; Q-C4; O-C4; T-C4; Du-F4.
Choir II: Sp-C1; D-C3; Sx-C4; U-C4; N-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are defined through antiphonal procedures, contrasting tonal emphases, and an “alleluia” refrain in triple mensuration. Within a homorhythmic texture, Gabrieli emphasizes the justaposition of related sonorities (dominant/tonic), third-related chords and major/minor chords (a and A). Except for the initial antiphonal response (Choirs I and II) of identical statements of “regina caeli,” most responses consist of short overlapping gestures. A brief coda follows a repeat of the “alleluia” refrain. Both choirs are harmonically independent. Declamatory style prevails. Final a, several cadences including the ultimate measure concludes on A.
