Type

Scores

Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SABB

S-C1; A-C3; B I-F3; B II-F3. As the subject of canon at the lower octave and distance of two breves between S and T, chant (App. 3) provides the structural framework for Festa’s antiphon; initially, the chant appears literally (“regina celi”) but is treated with increasing freedom as the line develops. Additionally, chant influences other voices, e.g. “portare” (A and B I), “resurrexit sicut” and “ora…nobis” where B II, BI and A anticipate the canonic entries. The two B voices frequently engage in imitation of motives limited to those voices (cf. RC061). Text underlay in non-canonic voices is treated with less concern than in the canonic voices. Final F, b♭ signature.
