Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. Chant (App. 3) provides the structural framework for Festa’s antiphon. Each textual phrase begins with anticipatory imitative statements usually concluding the final and most complete statement in the T, all normally in breves and semibreves; new contrapuntal material appears with more agile rhythmic gestures (minums and semiminums). Polyphonic setting adheres to the structure of the chant; the double melisma for “portare” is replicated in the T though the second melisma with the text “alleluia.” To emphasize the final “alleluia” the double melisma is presented in “paired imitation” but with invertible counterpoint. A combination of syllabic and melismatic styles defines the text setting. Final F, B♭ signature.
