Type

Motet

Scores

Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C4; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 3) permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture with each textual phrase including “alleluia” sections. Structure is clarified through cadences closing textual phrases and repetition of textual/musical materials. Corresponding to repeated phrases in the chant for “portare” and the final “alleluia” De Silva restates the entire texture for each segment. Additionally, the music for the first “alleluia” (mm. 14-21) is repeated for the second “alleluia” (mm. 44-50). A combination of syllabic and melismatic styles defines the text setting. Final F, b♭ signature.
