Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXXXX

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. Chr. II: Q-C3; Sp-C4; Sx-C4; O-F4. Entire range, F-a’.
Supported by three independent voices, chant (App. 3) in C of Chr. I, cast as a breve and semibreves, serves as cantus firmus (mm. 1-7) but continues as paraphrased chant; in the antiphonal response of Chr. II the cantus firmus (T, mm. 7-13) is surrounded by the musical material first presented in mm. 1-4 (mm. 9-13). An analogous situation occurs with the fourth line, “ora pro nobis Deum” where plainsong serves as cantus firmus (T of Chr. II, mm. 37-41) followed by response of Chr. I with cantus firmus in C (mm. 42-7); in this instance the surrounding and supporting material differ. Plainsong permeates the imitative texture of the fourth line, “resurrexit;” however, the following “alleluia” section (mm. 31-7) contrasts both in the presence of triple mensuration and homophony. Textual phrases are distinguished through antiphonal treatment, texture, harmonic goals and contrasting textures and mensuration. The final “alleluia” section constitutes more than a quarter of the entire antiphon (17 of 63 mm.) of which measures 52-7 form a slightly varied version of mm. 47-52; a Coda (57-63) of 8 individual voices closes a well-crafted antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.
