C-G2; Sx-C1; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Structural clarity enhanced through chant quotations, contrasts of texture and rhythmic gestures characterizes Asola’s Regina coeli. Chant introduces each of the four textual phrases within a three (“Regina coeli”) or four-voice texture of independent voices. Plainsong, associated with “Regina coeli” and cast as dotted breves and semibreves (C), is supported by two related motives in A & Q and restated in T & B (mm. 1-4).1 A second statement of “Regina coeli” in full-voice texture (mm. 5-7) has the appropriate chant in Sx; several voices include melismas for “laetare” (mm. 8-11), the final word of line 1. Although the “alleluia” sections (mm. 11-16, 24-9, 40-5 and 54-66) do not serve as a refrain, they do share rhythmic and melodic motives primarily in minums in syllabic style, and antiphonal procedures, concluding in full-voice texture. Surrounded by “alleluia” segments, “Ora pro nobis Deum” presents the most striking contrasts; primarily in breves and semibreves, each of the voices in a four-voice texture mirrors the plainsong in overlapping antiphonal statements (C, A, T, B & C, Sx, A, Q, mm. 46-54). Final G.

1. A similar procedure introduces Asola’s Alma redemptoris mater (AR013); identical pitches define the chant and the initial pitches of the supporting motives.
