[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Cast throughout the setting in semibreves, chant (App. 3) is relegated to the B as a cantus firmus with anticipatory imitative entrances in C, A and T for each textural phrase (“regina caeli,” “quia quem,” “resurrexit,” “sicut dixit” and “ora pro nobis”). For the chant melismas accompanying “laetare” and “portare” only principal pitches are included in the B; however, the entire melisma of the final “alleluia” (28 pitches, mm. 47-61) supports the overriding contrapuntal fabric. Text setting primarily emphasizes declamatory style with inclusion of a few “alleluia” melismas. Final F, b♭ signature.
