Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. The role of chant (App. 3) is limited but conspicuous: “regina caeli” motto, and interval of fifth associated with “quia” in C of both choirs; condensed version of “portare” melisma in T of Chr. II; and “ora…Deum” in C of Chr. I and T of Chr. II all presented in breves and semibreves. Antiphonal treatment involves overlapping statements of material (“regina caeli” and “quia”), varied repetition (“resurrexit” and “alleluia” sections), and new material for specific text (“sicut dixit”). A distinctive feature of the antiphon entails the rhythmic content (semiminums) of the “alleluia” sections contrasting with surrounding material. With “resurrexit…dixit” as its axis, a symmetrical design encompasses the antiphon (see below). A rapidly rising rhythmic gesture of fusae and semiminums (B) spanning an octave, first in F and then in G, depicts “resurrexit” (mm. 25-31). A declamatory text setting complements the homorhythmic texture. Final F, b♭ signature.
