[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SAB

[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Structural foundation involves double canon: canon 1 at the lower fourth at the distance of a semibreve between C and A for pars 1 and canon at the upper fourth between A and C for pars 1 also at the distance of a semibreve; canon 2 between B and T at the upper fourth and the distance of a semibreve for both partes. Since the initial notated pitches for the canon in both pars are duplicated at the octave, 1.p. begins with invertible counterpoint and 2.p. with paired imitation. To complement the first two textual phrases, “ave regina caelorum” and “ave domina angelorum” a slightly ornamented restatement is employed (mm. 1-16=17-32).[1] Additionally, “semper Christum” (mm. 105ff.) recapitulates the beginning of the motet. Limited concern for underlay of Pre Tridentine text. Final F, editorial b-flats necessary to avoid tritone in comes.

1. Identical or similar statements of the complete polyphonic texture congruent with “Ave, regina caelorum” and “Ave, Domino angelorum” define Ave regina caelorum settings by B. Appenzeller (AC009), A. De Silva (AC035), H. Isaac (AC061), J. Mantua (AC062), B. Klingenstein (AC064), G. P. Palestrina (AC095) and Anon (AC186).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
