Scores

[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

[C I]-C1; [C II]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-F3; [B]-F5. Chant (App. 2) appears intact at the beginning of textual phrases but is treated with freedom as the line unfolds. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture, chant most frequently occurs in the C voices but may permeate the texture (e.g., “ex qua…orta” and “gaude…speciosa”); free contrapuntal material is also involved in imitation. “Vale…exora” in triple mensuration contrasts with surrounding material. The Pre-Tridentine text is primarily in melismatic style with limited regard for text underlay. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Gaude gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
