Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-G2; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Appearing at the beginning of each textual phrase, chant (App. 2) as breves and semibreves, permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Paired imitation introduces each pars and is also included for “salve” and “valde” to emphasize the spatial quality of the texture. Text underlay of the Pre-Tridentine text suggests minimal concern. The setting concludes with “o mater dei memento mei” (“Mother of God, remember me”), a unique textual addition presented in primarily homorhythmic and syllabic styles. “Salve…sancta” in triple mensuration contrasts with surrounding material. Final C.

[2] Gaude gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
