[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTT

[C]-G2; [A]-C2; T-C4; TII-C5; TIII-F4. Entire range, G-g’’. Paraphrased chant (App. 2) introduces textual phrases in C (e.g., “ave regina,” ave domina,” and “vale”). The structure of the antiphon involves contrasts between duo sections and the full voice polyphonic texture; duos are relegated to “Ave regina celorum” C/T, the penultimate syllable of “angelorum” (C/A), “ex que…orta (A/TIII), “ave” (C/TII), “decora” (C/A), and ”et pro nobis” (A/TII). A rhythmic hierarchy particularly exists within the full voice texture wherein the lower voices with longer note values support the more rhythmically active upper voices. A melismatic setting of the Pre-Tridentine text prevails in all voices; the phrase “ave gloriosa” replaces “gaude gloriosa.” Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
