[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-C4. Entire range, c-d’’. Chant (App. 2), pitched on c, serves as a cantus firmus in continuous semibreves: “regina celorum,” mm. 4-9, “salve radix…,” mm. 20-35, and entirety of 2.p., “Gaude…exora,” mm. 36-69. The text, “ave domina angelorum” is devoid of chant, nor does chant influence other voices in the antiphon. In a few instances plainsong rises above C (e.g., “radix,” mm. 23-4) or descends below B (“super omnes,” mm. 43-4). Phrases 1 (“ave…celorum”) and 2 (“ave…angelorum”) are treated as independent sections that each conclude with a breve capped with a corona. A brief imitative passage introduces the second phrase, “ave…angelorum;” for a majority of the antiphon, C, A, & B surround the plainsong in a continuous contrapuntal texture. A syllabic text setting prevails. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
