Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-CI; T-C3; Ct-C3. No evidence of chant. C and T form the structural axis in this treble-dominated antiphon; text resides in C. Ct may be coupled rhythmically with T, but more often serves as an independent middle voice or harmonic support. The insertion of trope verses (see below) at strategic points is unique to this Ave regina celorum; two equal, texted voices with occasional passages in duple mensuration (“O speculum,” mm. 69-76 and 100-6) contrast with triple mensuration of the antiphon. A combination of melismatic and syllabic styles defines the text in antiphon and trope. Final g; b♭ signature in T and Ct.

Fons totius puritatis, Fount of all purity
Fontem manas caritatis, You emanate a fount of charity
Virgo gloriosa. O glorious virgin.

O speculum castitis, O mirror of chastity
Nos absolvas a peccatis, You deliver us from sin
Exitus in hora In the hour of our death.

Regis summe maiestatis,
Per quem tibi gratis,
Vis nature stupet satis
Tu gratiam implora.[1]
