[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble ATTB

A-C1; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Brief imitative passages (“ave domina,” “salve porta,” “vale” and “Christum”) appear within a contrapuntal texture. The setting exhibits declamatory style with frequent melismas. Although inner cadences in the 1.p. occur on C and F point toward an expected F final (b♭ signature), the 1.p. concludes on a; the 2.p. has Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
