Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; T-C4; BII-F3; BI-F4. Range, BI, F-b♭; BII, B♭-c’. The presence of two B parts within a Marian antiphon for 5 voices is highly unusual. Voice crossing does occur, but the tessitura of BII lies higher than that of BI. Chant (App. 2), primarily cast in semibreves, serves as a migrating cantus firmus in the three upper voices. Plainsong associated with initial “ave” appears in paired imitation (S/T, mm. 1-4 and A/BII, mm. 4-8) supported by the same B material; thereafter, the composer faithfully chronicles plainsong (e.g., “regina celorum,” S, mm. 7-12; “radix sancto,” T, mm. 33-7; and “super omnes,” A, mm. 53-8) within an imitative, contrapuntal texture. The mildly melismatic antiphon setting complements the plainsong version of the Pre-Tridentine text. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
