Full title / Other titles

AC147 Ave regina caelorum 4 vv

Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Chant appears in A of a 4-vv “Ave” prelude;[1] the remainder of the antiphon is free of chant. Textual phrases are differentiated through structural devices: contrast of full voice with three voices (A, T, B, “vale valde,” mm. 31-4 and “et pro nobis,” mm. 38-40), silence and cadential patterns. Homophony with homorhythmic passages prevails; voice independence is most evident with “gaude gloriosa” (mm. 21-6). Pre-Tridentine text set in syllabic style. Final F; b♭ signature.

1. Papini’s Ave regina celorum settings (AC100 and AC101) also have preludes; these antiphons are included in BolC Q31.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
