AC146 Ave regina caelorum 3 vv

Scores

Polyphonic ensemble STX

D-C1; T-F1; Ct-F3. Chant (App. 2), transposed a ninth higher, is primarily disposed in semibreves (D) within a contrapuntal fabric that emphasizes the D/T axis. The T is silent for the text “super omnes speciosa” providing relief from the surrounding 3-voice texture. Principal cadences conclude with an octave or a tenth between D and T. The Ct carries a text incipit; D and T exhibit melismatic style with limited concern for declamation of the pre-Tridentine text. Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
