Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B-f’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are clearly articulated through cadential patterns and antiphonal effects that feature contrasting voice groupings within a prevailing homorhythmic texture of this short setting (34 mm.). A trio for “ave…angelorum” contrasts with the preceding full voice texture of “ave…caelorum;” similarly, “qua…orta” (T, Q, B) contrasts with “gaude…gloriosa” (C, A, T, Q, B) that follows. A varied restatement of “vale…decora” (mm. 23-8) exhibits expressive harmonic language to depict the text (D-G-F-C-d-A followed by G-C-B♭-g-D-G). A predominantly syllabic style defines a declamatory setting of the Pre-Tridentine text. Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
