Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C1; Q-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. As a cantus firmus in the T, chant (App. 2) is represented by continuous semibreves throughout the polyphonic setting with no melodic influence upon the other voices. Full voice transparent texture defines the antiphon. Whereas the B primarily serves as harmonic support, the Q complements the range of the T (Q, g-b♭’ & T, g-g’), and weaves around the cantus firmus. The Pre-Tridentine text is primarily in declamatory style with occasional melismas. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
