Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. Chr. II: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B♭-F3. Entire range, B♭-d’’. Paraphrased chant (App. 2) introduces “Ave regina coelorum” in both B and T followed by paired imitation (T/B = C/A, mm. 1-5). Textual phrases are delineated through contrast of texture, mensuration and antiphonal procedures. Triple mensuration introduces the second stanza with homophonic/homorhythmic responses of “Gaude gloriosa.”[1] The following phrase, “super omnes speciosa,” cast in an imitative texture, consists of rising scalar motives of semiminums with text setting in syllabic style. Full voice (8 vv) texture defines “Ave domina angelorum” (mm. 8-15) and the concluding phrase “Et pro nobis semper Christum exora” (mm. 57-64) primarily with a dense polyphonic texture of 8 independent voices. Overlapping antiphonal statements normally extend for the duration of a breve to a semiminum. A syllabic setting of the Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
