Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C2; A-C3; T-C4; Q-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are distinguished through contrasting texture and mensuration as well as antiphonal treatment. An initial statement of “Ave…caelorum,” in a 4-voice homophonic texture (mm. 1-5) is followed by a full voice statement with individuality of vocal lines (mm. 5-9). On the other hand, “ave Domina angelorum” reflects antiphonal treatment within a homophonic/homorhythmic texture of alternating 4-voice groups: Sx, T, Q, B vs. C, A, T, Q (mm. 9-14). “Gaude gloriosa” in triple mensuration contrasts with surrounding material in duple mensuration but also in its use of antiphony: statements of “gaude” alternate between Sx, T, Q, B and C, A, T, Q (mm. 24-5) and of “gaude gloriosa” between Sx, Q, B and C, A, T (mm. 26-31). An imitative texture defines the remainder of the antiphon 9 (mm. 32-55) with motives that permeate the contrapuntal texture: “et pro nobis” (mm. 42-7) and “semper Christum” (mm. 46-53). Except for brief melismas (“decora” and “valde,” mm. 38-41), syllabic style defines the Pre-Tridentine text. Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
