Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

D-G2; Q-G2; A-C1; Sx-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-a’’. D and Q share identical range: g’-a’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are delineated through presence or absence of B and repetition of text and music. Of the eight text phrases, B is absent for the odd-numbered phrases as well as phrase 8: “Ave regina coelorum” (mm. 1-5), “salve radix sancta” (mm. 12-5), “gaude gloriosa” (mm.20-2), “vale, valde decora” (mm. 28-33) and “et pro nobis semper Christum exora” (mm. 34-39); for a 6-voice version of phrase eight, “et…exora” (mm. 39-44) the A of mm. 34-9 is repeated in B. To conclude the antiphon, the entire section, mm. 34-44, is recapitulated. Homorhythmic texture with occasional voice independence and a syllabic text setting prevail. Final d; b-flats, as well as f and g sharps, included in R 733.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
