Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

Tr-C1; T-C3; Ct-C5. Chant[1] is relegated to the T that exhibits comparable rhythmic gestures of the Tr and Ct in a setting reminiscent of the earlier conductus with its simultaneous rhythmic activity and text underlay beneath the lowest voice. Pre-Tridentine text with substitution of “ave” for “gaude” employs combination of syllabic and melismatic styles. Mensuration changes from compound duple (6/8) to triple at “ave gloriosa.” Final F, b♭ signature only for T.

1. The chant version for Ave regina celorum most closely follows that in British Museum, Harley 2942, f. 82v; see MB, vol. 8, p. 160 for transcription.

[2] Ave gloriosa

Polyphonic ensemble STX

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
