Scores

Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STTB

S-G2; TI-C3; TII-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 2) is quoted in its entirety in TII with semibreves and breves; for the initial “ave” all voices participate in imitation of the chant. The formal structure is delineated by textural and mensural contrasts. A 2 vv texture for “gaude” contrasts with the surrounding 4 vv texture. With “vale o valde decora” Peñalosa introduces triple mensuration and paired imitation involving invertible counterpoint Duple mensuration (“et pro…exora.”) concludes the antiphon. A sequential passage involving S, A and B emphasizes “ex qua…est (mm. 51-6). The setting of the Pre-Tridentine text combines melismatic and syllabic styles concluding with “Amen.” Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
