Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

[SI]-C1; [SII]-C1; [A]-C3; [TI]-C4; [TII]-C4; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. “Ave” cast as prelude[1] in layered polyphonic texture (SI/SII, A/TI and TII/B). Textual phrases are delineated through contrasts of texture and antiphonal affects; “ave…angelorum” is first presented by four voices (SI, A, TI, TII, mm. 15-8) followed by full voice statement of same text (mm. 19-22); three lowest voices (TI, TII, B), concurrent with “et pro nobis semper” is followed by a varied statement for three upper voices (SI, SII, A, mm. 52-6). Whereas most textual phrases are clearly delineated, the final words of phrase 2, “ex qua…orta,” and beginning of phrase 3, “gaude” are elided; however, “gaude” is emphasized in each voice through repetition or presence of disjunct intervals. “Christum exora” concludes with a corona capping each voice, followed by three repeated chords for “exora.” Except for melismatic style for “Ave,” a declamatory setting of Pre-Tridentine text primarily in syllabic style defines the antiphon. Final F; b♭ signature.

1. Papini’s Ave regina celorum (AC100) as well the Anonymous setting AC147 also has a prelude; these antiphons are included in BolC Q31.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
