[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

Two equal choirs. C-CI; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Paraphrased chant permeates imitative texture of “Ave regina caelorum” (Pars 1, Chr. I, mm. 1-10) and “Ave Domina angelorum” (Pars 2, Chr. II, mm. 14-18), each comprising 13 measures; the directive for Chrs. II & I, respectively, reads: “Ave Regina Tacet” and “Ave Domina Tacet.” Textual phrases are differentiated through texture, rhythmic gestures and antiphonal treatment. To complement the trochaic prosody of “Gaude gloriosa,” triple mensuration and homophonic/homorhythmic texture defines the beginning of the second stanza, “Gaude…” (mm. 43-5 and 51-70), a segment that involves considerable text repetition and antiphony. The textual phrase “vale…decora,” first presented in homophony (Chr. II, mm. 78-81), is followed by a contrasting statement of four voices, two from each choir (Chr. I, C & A and Chr. II, C & T) for independent voices; a repeat of “valde decora” involves C & T of Chr. I and C & A of Chr. II. An eight-voice statement of “vale” (m. 85) introduces a second statement of the text for four voices from two choirs concluding with a tutti (mm. 88-90). Full-voice texture (8 voices) emphasizes “salve…sancta” (mm. 28-35), sections of “gaude…” (mm. 52-5 & 62-5), “super…speciosa” (mm.72-7) and “Christum exora” (mm. 98-101). With reduction of voices “vale valde decora,” mm. 81-4 and 86-7), choirs are harmonically dependent upon each other. Except for melismas accompanying “ave” of the two initial textual phrases, a syllabic text of Pre-Tridentine prevails in this well-crafted setting of the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
