Scores

Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; A-C3; T-C4; Sx-C4; Q-C4; B-F4. An intact chant (App. 2) appears principally in semibreves and breves in canon at the fifth at the distance of 3 breves between T and Sx with but slight influence upon other voices. Freely composed material in other voices is cast in an imitative, contrapuntal fabric. The salutation “ave” is repeatedly set in a melismatic style whereas the remaining Pre-Tridentine text is declamatory with occasional melismas. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
