Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

C-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T-C4; B-F4. A likely chant source for Navarro’s setting is the Heronymite Processional of 1569;[1] the chant is primarily relegated to the C and T in semibreves and breves with occasional influence upon other voices within an imitative, contrapuntal texture; freely composed material also plays significant role. Additionally, the setting seems to have influenced Juan Esquivel, reputedly Navarro’s student, whose Ave regina coelorum (AC041) shares the same chant source; specific passages reveal marked similarities between the two 5 vv settings (“ave regina coelorum,” “salve radix” and “vale”).[2] Whereas Esquivel used the Tridentine text, Navarro’s syllabic setting is of the Pre-Tridentine version. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
