Scores

[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB

Four equal choirs: S-C1; A-C3, T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-f’’. No evidence of chant. Particularly the music of the S but also portions of the lower voices are related to the opening of Naldi’s twelve-voice Ave regina coelorum. Repetition, contrasting materials, textures and antiphonal effects define the formal structure. The opening textual/musical material is stated in each choir and the same music is used for “ave” of the second phrase; here, the music for the first half (4 vv) of “ave regina coelorum” is placed above or below the last half (4 vv) and this eight-voice complex is restated antiphonally. Similar treatment figures also for “radix sancta.” The salutation “gaude” is stated antiphonally in two choirs followed by eight antiphonal statements of “gaude gloriosa, gaude” in four choirs. Contrasting triple mensuration and chordal style are used for “valde decora.” Following a measure of silence, the final phrase “et pro nobis” is announced by all choirs; thereafter, overlapping double choirs (Ch. II and III, Ch. I and IV) proceed to the conclusion. The verse and responsory that follow the antiphon are also set, the verse composed for four treble voices, the three lower voices in canon at the unison beneath a pedal c” in the upper voice, and the responsory for four choirs in chordal style.[1] Pre-Tridentine text. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. See AC088 for relationships between Naldi’s two multiple choir settings.

Ave, regina caelorum,

Salve, radix, salve, porta,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
