Three equal choirs. S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-f’’. No evidence of chant. The formal structure of the setting is defined by contrasting motivic material, textures and antiphonal effects. Typically, a textual phrase begins by alternating material through the three choirs to conclude with the tutti (“ave…angelorum,” “salve…orta,” and “vale…exora”). For the text “gaude, gaude gloriosa” Naldi overlaps the antiphonal material with twelve statements (four for each choir) concluding with “gloriosa” for the tutti. In a similar manner, following each choir’s exclamation of “vale,” eight statements of the textual/musical material for “valde decora” conclude with a chordal tutti declaration of the same text. Except for the melismatic settings of “ave” and salve” the Pre-Tridentine text is primarily in declamatory style. The “salve” motto (la-sol-la-re) from Salve regina chant in the S of Ch. III and Ch. I with “salve radix” is set apart in long note values. The verse and responsory that follow the antiphon are also set, the verse composed for three treble voices in canon at the unison and the responsory in chordal style. Final F, b♭ signature.[1]

V: Dignare me laudare te virgo sacrata. Let me praise you, most holy virgin.

R: Da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos. Give me strength against your enemies.[2]

1. See AC089 for musical relationship between Naldi’s 2 multiple choir settings.

2. Floriana Canale’s Ave regina coelorum (AC025) also includes this responsory.
