Scores

[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Voci pari. Range, F-a♭’. Chant (App. 2) plays prominently in the polyphonic setting, introducing each textual phrase, though treated with increasing freedom thereafter, and permeating the imitative, polyphonic texture fabric within a structure of overlapping textual phrases. The Pre-Tridentine text is set in a primarily melismatic style; “vale” is omitted in “vale valde decora.” The “salve” motto (la-sol-la-re) from Salve regina chant appears in the upper voice with “salve radix” (mm. 47-49). The use of two flats (b♭ and e♭) in the signature (Dorian on C) is unusual, as is the occasional presence of a♭ (e.g., m. 105) and d♭ (e.g., mm. 21 and 106).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
