Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. “Ave regina coelorum” intonation (App. 2). Plainsong also introduces “Ave Domina angelorum” (T/B, A, C, mm. 1-5) within an imitative polyphonic texture. A full-voice texture with overlapping phrases prevails; however, textual and structural points are emphasized through repetition of full texture (“gaude,” mm. 17-21) and silence; the final phrase “et pro nobis semper Christum exora” is introduced through imitative entries (T, C, A, B, mm. 28-32) to culminate with a breve on C. Following a semibreve rest, a “coda” of 12 mm. with the same text closes the work; consequently, 21 mm. of a 43-measure antiphon comprises the final textual phrase. Third-related harmonies (F & D) with f and f♯ in A emphasize “ex qua mundo.”[1] A combination of syllabic style and brief melismas defines the text setting. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Metallo’s Alma redemptoris mater (AR072) illustrates an identical procedure. The presence of cross-relationships is quite common; on the other hand, pitch inflections in one voice are infrequent.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
