Scores

[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[C]-G2; [A]-C2; [TI]-C3; [TII]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, c-a’’. Chant (slightly differs from (App. 2), pitched on f, in continuous semibreves[1] (B) in each pars supports four independent voices. Except for brief initial imitative segments for all partes, a dense texture of independent voices consists of motivic and rhythmic gestures primarily of minums and semiminums. The antiphon is devoid of homophonic/homorhythmic passages. Of particular interest are the passages saturated with succinct melodic/rhythmic motives: “super omnes speciosa,” 3.p., mm. 45-52 and “valde decora,” 4.p., mm. 56-63. A primarily syllabic text setting includes occasional melismas (“angelorum,” mm. 12-8 and “vale,” mm. 55-7). Final F, b♭ signature.

1. D-Mbs Mus.ms. 519 includes 6 Marian antiphons, three attributed to C. Martin (AR069, AC079, and RC133), two to O. Lassus (RC114 and SR145), and one anonymous [C. Martin?] Salve regina (SR337), each of which includes a cantus firmus of the appropriate Marian antiphon in continuous semibreves (square black chant notation in source).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
