Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are delineated through contrasting thematic material and imitative treatment of initial words of phrases; paired imitation (S/A and T/B) defines “ave regina” whereas imitation at the distance of a minum occurs with “ave domina” and “gaude.” A rising stepwise gesture (B) in minums associated with “gloriosa super omnes speciosa” extends from F-b♭ but is abbreviated in T and S. Syllabic style predominates in a declamatory setting of the Pre-Tridentine text. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
