Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SAATBB

C-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T-C4; BI-F4; B II-F4. No evidence of chant; however, the C may be derived from an unidentified chant source for the first three textual phrases. The formal structure is primarily delineated through textural contrasts and antiphonal effects. For the first three textual phrases (“ave…caelorum,” “ave…angelorum,” and “salve…sancta”) Lasso employs antiphonal principles whereby the textual/musical material of the upper three voices is restated an octave lower with the presence of invertible counterpoint for the first and second phrases. With the abundant use of imitation, contrapuntal devices and variety of voice combinations, this setting constitutes Lasso’s most ambitious setting of this text. The Pre-Tridentine text is primarily set in a declamatory style. Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
