Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Chant (App. 2), in continuous semibreves, serves as cantus firmus (B);[1] however, within each of the first two textual phrases the pitch “e” has been altered to e♭. To complement repetition of chant for the first two textual phrases (“ave…coelorum” and “ave…angelorum), Klingenstein slightly varies the music of the three upper voices for the second phrase;[2] some similarities also occur in the upper voices for identical plainsong associated with “ex qua mundo lux est orta” and “super omnes speciosa” (mm. 28-36 and 42-50). Paraphrased chant also introduces textual phrases (e.g., “ave regina,” C, mm. 1-5). Full voice texture with only occasional minum or semiminum rests defines the antiphon. Rhythmic gestures primarily include minums, semiminums and fusae. Declamatory setting of Pre-Tridentine text combines melismatic (“coelorum,” “angelorum” and “salve”) and syllabic (considerable text repetition for final phrase, “vale, valde decora”) styles. Final F, b♭ signature.[1]

1. Klingenstein’s Regina coeli (RC104), also with plainsong assigned to B, exhibits similar style features.

2. Identical or similar statements of the complete polyphonic texture congruent with “Ave, regina caelorum” and “Ave, Domino angelorum” define Ave regina caelorum settings by B. Appenzeller (AC009), A. De Silva (AC035), H. Isaac (AC061), J. Mantua (AC062), B. Klingenstein (AC064), G. P. Palestrina (AC095) and Anon (AC186).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
