Scores

Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Q-F3; B-F4. The paraphrased chant (App. 2), primarily intact at the beginning of phrases, permeates the imitative, polyphonic fabric comprised of overlapping textual phrases. The initial pitch for “ave” on b♭ and subsequent imitative entries (f’, b♭, f and B♭) differs from the usual entries on C and F. With considerable voice crossing the four lower voices function within a two-octave range: F-f’. Gombert combines syllabic and melismatic styles in setting the Pre-Tridentine text. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
