Scores

Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble S

C-C2, A-C4, T-F3, Q-F3, B-F4. Four lower voices all within the range, F-f’ results in considerable voice crossing. Chant (App. 2), cast in semibreves, breves and longae, serves as cantus firmus, segmented according to textual phrases. Except for initial imitative entries (C, A, T, B, mm. 1-2) that mirrors plainsong associated with “Ave,” the remainder of the antiphon is free of chant influences. A dense texture comprised of rhythmic gestures primarily constructed of semiminums and fusae defines the antiphon. The character of voices (C, A, T & B) remains consistent throughout the antiphon. Repetition of textual phrases or specific words of the Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
