Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. “Ave” intonation in B. Chant, (App. 2) primarily as semibreves, is relegated to the B for “ave…caelorum” and to the T for “ave…angelorum.” Within an imitative texture, paraphrased chant occurs in T, B and S with “salve…porta”; thereafter, chant is absent. Textual phrases are distinguished through presence or absence of chant and contrasts of texture and mensuration. Gastoldi employs an imitative, contrapuntal texture for “ave…speciosa” and a homorhythmic texture with strong root movement in triple mensuration for “vale…exora” in his declamatory setting of the Pre-Tridentine text (only the phrase “salve radix et porta” exhibits imitation). Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
