Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[S]-C1; Ct-C3; T-C4. The S carries a paraphrased version of the Sarum chant transposed a fifth higher.[1] “Ave” intonation corresponds to the Roman chant version in FlorBN Magl. 112bis, that in ModE X.2.22 to the Sarum version. Textual phrases are defined by cadences, number of voices (two voices for “ave domina angelorum” and “ave glorioso…decora”) and mensuration. Use of Pre-Tridentine text with “ave gloriosa” instead of “gaude gloriosa.” Except for “et pro…exora” in duple mensuration a major portion of the setting is in triple mensuration. Melismatic text setting prevails. Final G.

1. The Sarum version of Ave regina celorum is included in MB 8, p. 160.

[2] [Gaude] gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
