Guillaume Du Fay

Full title / Other titles

AC037 Ave regina caelorum 3 vv

Scores

Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[S]-C2; Ct-C4; T-C4. No evidence of chant. Dominating homophonic texture wherein textual/musical phrases are separated by rests. Exhibits frequent crossing of lower voices. Use of Pre-Tridentine text with a concluding “Alleluya,” an addition that suggests use during the Easter season; the “Alleluya” could be deleted by cadencing 8 measures earlier providing an acceptable antiphon for other seasonal uses. Includes several double-leading-tone cadences. Final d.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
