Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. No evidence of chant. Juxtaposed or overlapping textual phrases articulate the formal structure of the antiphon. Except for the textual phrases “gaude gloriosa” (mm. 22-24) and “super omnes speciosa” (mm. 24-9) that display similar antiphonal treatment of melodic, rhythmic and harmonic elements, antiphony involves contrasting materials of both identical (e.g., “ave regina celorum”) and contiguous textual phrases. Tutti segments (“salve…porta” mm. 10-15; “vale…decora” mm. 29-37; and “et pro…exora” mm. 45-52) include independent voices whereas antiphonal sections demonstrate homophony with simultaneous text declamation of Pre-Tridentine text in each choir. Brief melismas accompany “porta” (C primus, mm. 16-8) and “valde” (C secundus, mm. 35-6). To complement trochaic prosody, “gaude gloriosa,” notated as M, Sm, M, Sm, M, M interprets the inherent textual prosody (long-short) within duple mensuration and homorhythmic style (mm. 22-4).[1] Final F, b♭ signature.

1. The same principle is applied to “gaude gloriosa” in Ave regina caelorum settings by L. Balbi (AC015), G. P. Palestrina (AC098) and O. Vecchi (AC132).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
