Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

Q-C1; C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Quintus, labeled “si placet” is an optional voice. No evidence of chant. Homophony accompanied with syllabic text settings prevails within this concise motet (30 mm.): “Ave regina…angelorum,” mm. 1-7; “gaude…speciosa,” mm. 15-22; and “et pro nobis…exora,” mm. 26-30. The responsory (6 mm) that follows the antiphon also reflects homophonic texture with text in syllabic style; the two “Amens” include brief melismas. Declamatory text setting defines the Pre-Tridentine antiphon text. Final d (two b-flats included in print; others must be inserted. A comparable situation exists regarding c-sharp).

1. Each of the four seasonal antiphons in Canale1575 includes a polyphonic setting of the respective responsory (AR023, RC045 and SR058). Romolo Naldi’s twelve and sixteen-voice settings (AC088 and AC089) also include this responsory.
