Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C2; A-C3; T-C4; Q-F3; B-F4. Entire range, F-c’’. Lowest four voices (A, T, Q, B) are within the range, F-f’. Initial pitches of chant associated with “Ave” (Q) and “regina caelorum” (T) supported by a descending stepwise motive that spans an octave (B, f-F), and followed by an antiphonal response of the upper voices (C, Sx, A) introduces the antiphon (mm. 1-6).[1] A full-voice texture of individual voices for “regina caelorum” (mm. 6-10) completes the first textual/musical phrase. Structural clarity and contrast of full-voice and reduced-voice textures established for the first textual phrase are continued throughout the antiphon; slightly more than half of the antiphon involves three or four-voice phrases. In addition to “regina caelorum,” the following textual phrases exhibit a full-voice texture: “salve radix et porta” (mm. 17-22); “vale valde de decora” (mm. 43-47); and “et pro nobis semper Christum exora” (mm. 51-61). A syllabic setting of the Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. The presence of chant in a three-voice texture treated antiphonally also distinguishes Asola’s Alma redemptoris mater (AR013) and Regina coeli (RC013) for six voices within a cycle of seasonal Marian antiphons published in A 2508.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
