Scores

[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. Paraphrased chant (App. 2), pitched on C, serves as cantus firmus (T) in 1.p., and in 2.p. where it continues primarily in continuous semibreves in 2.p. Vertical structure with independent voices dominates; a brief imitative passage at the unison (C/A, mm. 23-6) creates an unfortunate result with consecutive sevenths between C and B (mm. 23-4) A syllabic text setting of the Pre-Tridentine text with the alteration “salve radix et porta” prevails. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,
Salve radix sancta

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
