Scores

[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Relegated to the T as a cantus firmus, chant (App. 2), pitched on c, primarily appears as semibreves with occasional chant references in the other voices; most notably, the B anticipates the initial “ave” prior to the T statement of the melody. Since voices proceed independently within a contrapuntal texture, imitation plays a minor role. The Pre-Tridentine text is set in declamatory style. Final C.

[2] Gaude gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
